The aim of the research project BUILDING NEW RELATIONSHIPS IN RURAL AREAS UNDER URBAN PRESSURE is to help actors in rural areas to provide Rural Goods and Services (RGS) related to the landscape and to get compensation payments by new relationships with the urban society. RGS are first and second houses, tourism and gastronomy with agri-food marketing. It analyses the relationships between rural and urban actors in order to assess their role to enhance the diversity of rural landscapes. Since agriculture and forestry are the most important land uses in European rural areas, the project will pay attention to their role to safeguard the green landscape and to provide RGS.

The research project BUILDING NEW RELATIONSHIPS IN RURAL AREAS UNDER URBAN PRESSURE is a 3 years project during 2002-2005. To be able to identify differences and similarities, the research will analyse experiences in Finland, France, Hungary, The Netherlands and Spain. In each country two study areas will be selected. The first one is the Metropolitan rural area (M-area): the rural area nearby a metropolitan area. The second one is the Tourist rural area (T-area): the rural area further away lying nearby tourist coastal zones.

The research project BUILDING NEW RELATIONSHIPS IN RURAL AREAS UNDER URBAN PRESSURE is a partnership between the Agricultural Economics Research Institute in the Netherlands (coordinator), the University of Helsinki, the Universities of Paris, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the University of Valencia. The research project has been funded by the European Commission within the Fifth Framework Programme (QLK5-CT-2002-01696).  The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality in the Netherlands funded 50% of the budget for the Agricultural Economics Research Institute.
